What "Permanent and Total" means, and how to tell if you have it

P&T is not a rating. It is a finding VA adds to a total rating when it decides your condition will not improve. It unlocks a separate set of benefits for your family and your state.

Three things people call "100%"

How to check

  1. Log in to VA.gov and download your Benefit Summary Letter (also called the VA benefits letter).
  2. Look for the line "You are considered to be totally and permanently disabled due solely to your service-connected disabilities" or the words "permanent and total."
  3. On your rating decision, look for "Basic eligibility to Dependents' Educational Assistance is established". That line only appears when P&T is granted.
  4. No "future exam" date listed is a good sign but not proof.
